Is your workplace prepared to avoid a

Critical Incident?

KNOW THE FACTS

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, one out of every six acts of violence committed in America occur on the job.

  • In one year alone, workplace violence cost American companies 4.2 billion dollars in lost revenues not including 55 million in lost employee wages.

  • Six out of every ten incidents of workplace violence occur within private companies.

  • Since 1995, the number one cause of death for women in the workplace is homicide.

On an almost daily basis, we are reminded that an act of violence can occur anywhere; within our communities, in our schools and at our workplaces. Although incidents of violence may appear to be many times umprovoked and without warning, the act in itself is rarely random or spontaneous. In fact, it is the last link in an often long chain of events leading up to a critical incident.

The best defense against violence is the education of company management and employees in the factors and warning signs that lead to an act of violence.

Factors within the workplace may include:

  • No clearly defined rules of conduct
  • Lack of management training
  • Inadequate security controls
  • Poor incident documentation
  • A work atmosphere that tolerates harrassment and indignity
  • Failure of management to take action
  • Lack of or weak policies against any form of violence
  • Negligent human resource or hiring practices

Incident indicators or warning signs from employees include:

  • Bullying or a history of aggression against employees and/or management
  • Domestic or substance abuse
  • Disdain for authority
  • Romantic or sexual obsessions
  • Personal problems including financial distress or marital discord
  • Obsessive involvement with the job at the exclusion of all else
  • Projects blame onto others
  • Pushes the limits of normal conduct
